About Stargaze Camp

Last updated 2026-10-19

Stargaze Camp is now Night Gaze Camp. The current version of this page is at nightgazecamp.com/about/.

Stargaze Camp is a phone app that answers one question: where should I camp tonight to see the stars or the aurora?

It treats US federal campgrounds and national park units as the places to stay, and ranks them with tonight’s cloud forecast, moonlight, an estimate of sky darkness and the chance of aurora. You can plan several nights at once, download state data for use offline, and export the plan as a PDF or calendar file.

How it is made

• Campground and park records come from US government public-domain data: the Recreation Information Database (RIDB) and the National Park Service.
• Cloud forecasts come from the US National Weather Service; aurora data comes from NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center.
• Stargaze Camp is an independent product. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by any government agency.
• Sky darkness is estimated from satellite night-light data. It is not a measurement. See Support.
• Every data source and open-source library is listed on the credits page.
